I appear to have missed something during Alsa installation and am unable to
get any sound out of my system's speakers. Here is what I get from the

The sharing of Int 9 by the modem and the 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio as shown by
lspci -vv above has not been a problem in the past and I don't believe it is
the problem now.
I do see that the module alias char-major-116 does not appear to be found. I
also know that the modules.conf file does alias this to the snd module as
shown above. I have located what I believe is the correct snd module in:
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o
If you look at the output from lsmod above, the snd module does appear to be
loaded.
Also, I noticed the message:

from /var/log/messages above which appears to be strange, since I don't have a
joystick connected to the system and nothing is connected to any USB port.
I have the volume all the way up on the speakers. I have not changed the
hardware configuration from the time when sound was being produced using the
arts server.
The output from amixer above shows that the Master, Master M, CD and PCM on
both L and R channels (non-Mono of course) is at full and that no channel is
muted.
Using aplay does not produce any sound from the speakers. I also do not have
any kde sounds anymore. There was a mention that kwmsound needed to be in the
kde startup script, but kwmsound does not appear to be a part of the RH9
distribution as far as I can tell.
The arts server has been turned off in the KDE control center and ps -elf does
not show it running. The sound group of the control center shows that the
alsa driver is being used.
The driver files were compiled with debugging on.
Trying to use the CD with KsCD does not produce any sound.
Trying to run xmame.xgl produces the following sound error:

and locks up the console.
I'm using an Intel D845BGL motherboard with an integrated Intel810 chipset,
1.8GHz i686, 512MB RAM.
