I am running Debian Linux and am trying to install a driver for a C-Media CMI8738.

I have downloaded the driver for the 2.2 kernal which I am running.

I logged into X (kde2) as root then did the following:

1) create a directory /usr/src/linux/driver/sound/ and unzipped the files into that directory.
2) changed to /usr/src/linux,
3) run make xconfig

then I get the following error:

No rule to make target. 'Rule.make". Stop.

I have tried running make in the /usr/src/linux/driver/sound/ driectory and the same thing happens.

What am I doing wrong?
