I'm not sure what you mean by "6-channel". Do you use an external
decoder at the SPDIF outputs or do you use a software decoder to hear
AC3 through the 6 analog outputs? Or do you mean something else?
I don't know about software decoding, but (external) hardware decoding
works here:
# cat /proc/asound/cards

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.9.8.
Compiled on Nov 30 2003 for kernel 2.4.23 with versioned symbols.
I can play the "Multichannelcheck" DD and DTS files from
<http://www.sr.se/multikanal/english/e_index.stm> both with aplay and
with mplayer -ac hwac3 -ao alsa9, and can hear all six channels.
