Hi! I specialize in building Debian systems (usually unstable) since in Poland there is a rush to be "legal" (the truth is that the police and some workplaces are sending police to check on workers/students homes if they own legal software. If they do not, they pay 3x the worth of the pirated software). Since when i first installed my first Debian, i used to have a CMI8738. the biggest thing that bugged me was the "software mixer" problem. Neither Arts nor ESD covered my needs. Then i turned to ALSA (it was version 0.9.5 when i started using it). I mustsay that the quality of Sound services is MUCH greater than in OSS. However, i did NOT get around how to set up DMIX so that all programs talk to the plug instead of the chip. After that i decided to buy a card that support HW mixing, a SB Live! 1024. A wise choice, especially that these cards are dirt-cheap nowadays.
Today as i encounter different configurations, some ppl ask why are they allowed to run only 1 sound service at a time. If i reply to them that their hardware doesn't support it, they say "but i never had such problem with windows". And i can't really say a thing because DMIX is VERY poorly documented. Can someone PLEASE make up a generic .asound thatwould do the aforementioned thing? Also, if you could comment what line do i need to change for different sound card modules. That would be nice. BTW, some time ago i stumbled across a AC97 chip that would just not work with OSS (it didn't gave an error, but when i tried playing something it would just fill the buffer, play that and not do anything else). To my surprise, ALSA worked like a charm with it. So keep up the good work guys, i really apreciate it :) Just document it a little bit more -- Best regards, Movi -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
