Sorry, I didn't see this in my first posting, but I have no idea why
"true" wasn't saved.
I did the following
alsactl -f /etc/myasoundstate store
vi /etc/myasoundstate
alsactl -f /etc/myasoundstate restore
myasoundstate shows "value true"
