The cs46xx's outputs can all be independenly used:

Using the 'front', 'rear', 'spdif' pcm devices.

(some cards also give you a center_lfe edvice.. and at least the GTXP 
 has a seperate headphone output too, which theoretically can be used 
 independently, though ALSA doesn't support that)

As for mirroring the pcm sound on front+rear -- create a n .asoundrc in 
your home directory:

pcm.ch40dup {
        type route
        slave.pcm surround40
        slave.channels 4
        ttable.0.0 1
        ttable.1.1 1
        ttable.0.2 1
        ttable.1.3 1
}

and use the 'ch40dup' pcm device in XMMS or whatever.
