Thanks for answering. Yep I did read it all kinds of links about
udev. But that doesn't mean I understood all of it :)
In any case, I remembered /etc/default/alsa (debian system) with,
# Set as true if you want the OSS compatibility layer
# to be automatically loaded as well.
startosslayer=true
It had been set to false. But in the past that had never stopped the
modules from being loaded.
