You're using the intel8x0 driver, right?  It never worked very well for me, 
and I eventually found a real soundcard (with hardware mixing, dmix not 
needed, yay!).  But when I was getting ticks, I could fix it in XMMS by 
turning off mmap mode in the second tab of the alsa configuration dialog.

BTW, when you type dmesg on a command line, do you see anything relating to 
sound or lost interrupts?  I did.
