Now I running Linux at work (30 PCs, all Shuttle SK41's) which have the VT8235 sound 'card' on-board identified as "Realtek ALC650 rev 3" by alsamixer. My problem is that try as I might, I'm unable to record any sound from the microphone input.

take a look at this thread... Now I can record and do what ever I want (or not far from that) on my SK43G. Take also a look at your connectivity between front jacks and the mobo.
For more information, I would be really bad : I don't have time, I don't have lots of experience w/ multimedia, this is not my hobby (I prefer more system/networking stuff).
