oss is set up via the modules.conf listed below.  /dev/dsp is appropriately
linked with appropriate permissions.  also, that shouldn't effect xmms via the
alsa plugin or aplay.

truth is, i simplified a little, i'm using debian so it's actually via modutils.
 but, in any event, i believe 2.6 still uses modules.conf

i have tried that, but the fact that i do get _some_ sound makes this seem
unlikely.

i agree that these two may no be entirely alsa problems, just thought it was a
little suspicious.  i have tried a number of settings on aplay for what it's
worth.
