I'm trying to check out the latest version from CVS, and I'm getting the error "can't create temporary directory /tmp/cvs-<number>". After a quick look around at Google, I diagnose this error as a problem with the CVS repository's configuration.

See <http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-cvs/2002-01/msg01091.html> for someone else's description of the problem and <http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-cvs/2002-01/msg01114.html> for the answer.

In other words, I (as a remote user) am for some reason not being allowed to create a file on Alsa's CVS server in /tmp.
