That's odd, since you already had the nodes. I'll wager a guess that the Great Undying Udevd cleared permissions on the /dev/snd directory as it does here from time to time (check ps ax before you say you aren't using it).
If so, it'll happen again. ls -ld /dev/snd, and chmod go+rx /dev/snd when it does, or figure out how to disable that bloody thing for good.
