That is the main problem here... the 2.6.8-2-386 kernel is really just the 2.6.8 kernel, there is no difference (besides the name).  I installed the source for the 2.6.8 kernel, and it is not finding it.  Do you think it would be okay if I just copied that source to a different directory?

It seems that /lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/source does exist... but it is just a soft link to '/home/horms/tmp/debian-kernel-test/kernel-image-2.6.8-i386/kernel-image-2.6.8-i386-2.6.8/install-386'.

I guess that means that this is not ALSA specific, so I will not pester this newsgroup with non ALSA specific questions.
