Thanks for the suggestion.  I compiled the ALSA driver intel8x0 into the kernel 
(I tried 2.6.13 and 2.6.14) but still no sound.  Did you have to use any 
'special' mixer settings in order to get it to work?  I'm also curious to know 
what version of alsa you were using.  I'm using version 1.0.8 but, as I think I 
previously mentioned, I have also tried 1.0.10.
