It is indeed so that webforums are more accesible to the avarage user then the mailinglists are. Though I would not go so far as to say that they are a better support solution. The ubuntu forums which are mentioned as an example are also a very good example of bad support. A lot of the suggestions and "solutions" are often not very neat at its best.

I think having a webforum along side the mailinglist could be a usefull addition to the alsa projects support channels. Grabbing back to the ubuntu forums, those guys were somehow able to integrate the the mailinglist into the webforums. There it was possible for users to view certain mailinglists as part of the webforums. Effectively building a hybrid system.

I think the alsa project should not dismis the creation of a webforum as fast as is being done in this thread. I think it could proove very usefull if properly used.

I have to chime in here and say I can't stand mailing lists.  Most web forums these days are far from clumsy.  Now searching the archive of the mailing lists, now thats clumsy.  Off the top of my head, one thing that would be great with a forum is subcategories.  Imagine having sections like, pci soundcards, onboard sound, usb soundcards, dmix issues, jack issues, and a howto section dealing with stuff like multiple soundcards etc.  Mailing lists are just flat dumb lists with little to no ability to manipulate the data.  Maybe the are better for devs, but imho they suck for end users.  Look at the great community a distro like ubuntu has, one of the main reasons is the forums.

Mailing lists are also friendlier than web-forums to
those using braille or text-to-speech systems.
