After following your instructions to remove all old drivers I was able to compile
and install the alsa 1.0.11 modules applicable to subject card. They are loaded automatically
without error. After running amixer to set up the card I am still unable to play. I am
attaching copies of settings from card info, loaded modules, amixer settings and
a copy of /etc/asound.state.
It seems like I should be able to play a cd with workbone which I have used since 1998
but apparently something is wrong. I am using the 2.4.31 kernel with Slackware 10.2.
Can you make any further suggestions i might try? I feel like I am very close.

The unresolved symbols mean you installed the module incorrectly. The
most common cause is compiling and trying to load new ALSA modules while
old ones are still loaded.
Usually a reboot fixes it.
