You're quite right.  I've started doing that.  Much quicker for testing.

Well... it can be, no?  The Audigy 2 in my desktop machine and even the ac97
bits in my old laptop both presented treble and bass sliders via alsamixer.

It means just that.  There is an item visible in alsamixer labelled "input
source" and I cannot seem to effect any sort of change on it.
