Udo, It seems like this way all works OK:
arecord -D plug:iec958 -r 44100 -c 2 -f S16_LE out.wav aplay -D plug:spdif test.wav I have used toslink loopback for testing. The thing is SPDIF-out seems to be truncated to 16 bit (see ALSA bug 1592). For testing I have used zero-padded ~5 sec signal of 1Hz saw at -6db. Input and output (not zero) fragments are binary equal. Thanks for your help and participation!
