I was being led astray by http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/asoundrc.php , which begins in no uncertain terms: "Neither of the .asoundrc or alsa.conf files are required for ALSA to work properly." Maybe someone should update that! ;-) My cross-build Makefile really should have installed /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf for me but I'll fix that now.
