Firstly, sorry for replying directly to you >_< I always forget to reply to the list :\ Secondly, does your motherboard documentation actually say it supports 5.1? It probably does say so, but if it doesn't then you'll waste a lot of time! Thirdly, have you enabled 6 channel output in alsamixer? At least on my snd-hda-intel card there's a mixer to switch between 2, 4 and 6 channel output. Hope some of this helps, -ol
