Before I waste anyone else's time on this ... This turned out not to be a problem with the Audiophile card or with the alsa driver. Much swapping out of different components revealed that it was a problem with (one channel of) the amplifier. I apologize for the wasted bandwidth. The playback quality from this card under Alsa is just excellent.
