Try running http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa/raw-file/tip/alsa-info.sh
and posting the link it generates. This will help us debug your system
better.
Also, I believe Ubuntu Gutsy installs the snd-hda-intel driver
in /lib/modules/<KVER>/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel (or somewhere close to
that). When building and installing new audio drivers, I recommend
adding "--with-moddir=/lib/modules/<KVER>/updates/alsa" (replace <KVER>
with your kernel version).
