Short follow-up, I think I have solved the issue by blacklisting snd_hda_codec_hdmi in /etc/modprobe.conf/blacklist.conf (a tried a simple rmmod earlier but that didn't cut it). Sound seems to be back now. I guess the Radeon card interfered.
