Thanks, now it's much narrower.  Adrian's big rewrites have been
merged since 2.6.39 kernel.  3.0 had only minor changes that are
likely irrelevant.  3.1 and 3.2 had again significant changes.

So, if anyone can test 2.6.39 and 3.1 kernels, it'd be another good
step forward.

Also, for a live system, you still can test the user-space stuff
changes.  For example, on the working system (e.g. Debian 5 or 6),
copy libasound.so.2.0.0 (or the corresponding one) to somewhere
(e.g. /tmp).  Then run aplay like 
   % LD_PRELOAD=/tmp/libasound.so.2.0.0 aplay something.wav
