Perhaps a sound server defaults to use the integrated sound device? Pulseaudio nowadays seems to be installed as the default sound server by most Linux distros that provide an out of the box working desktop environment and even for other distros it's an annoying dependency. For my Linux installs empty dummy packages fake to fulfil the pulseaudio dependency, while I'm using jackd to use several audio streams.
