But as far as I can tell ALSA is turning them into 2-channel outputs. At least I can not see any surround channels in alsamixer and I can only play 2-channel sound to them using speaker-test. How can I find out where the change from 8 channels to 2 channels is happening? And how can I get 7.1-channel (or 5.1-channel) sound to these outputs?
