-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Media Release 2 September 2006 Nine inning decider The Australian Open Womenâs team has gone down to Japan 2-1 in a tight, nine inning, game at the ISF Womenâs World Championship in Beijing, China. It was a battle on the mound as both Australian and Japanese pitchers kept batters at bay. Australiaâs Melanie Roche gave only five hits away from 27 batters faced for the game. At the top of the eighth inning, the international tie-breaker rule came into effect with Australiaâs Amanda Doman placed on first base. Doman was moved around the bases and scored after Morrow singled to centerfield. Australia took a 1-0 lead, but Japan was quick to reply to level the scores at the bottom of the eighth innings. Japan scored in the bottom of the ninth with a drive down the line to right field to score the winning run. Australia has moved to second on the results ladder in Pool B, with Japan taking top spot. Australia plays the Netherlands, who are sixth, in the last game of the round at 9.30pm (AEST) in tonightâs play. If Australia finishes in second spot, they will take on the team who finishes in top place of the results ladder in Pool A in the first round of the finals. Japan will go into the finals undefeated as they receive an automatic 7-0 win over Colombia who forfeited the event. ____________________________________ DiAnne Lilburn National Communications Coordinator Softball Australia Suite 4, Ground Floor 38-40 Prospect Street Box Hill, Victoria 3128 T: +61 3 9890 8200 F: +61 3 9890 8295 M: +61 (0) 405 509 674 For more information visit www.softball.org.au <http://www.softball.org.au/ _____________________________________________________________________________ Did you know that Australia is the world's number one softball nation?
