Subject: Canadian_Softball_Team_earns_Silver_Medal_at_China_Cup_/_L -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE October14th, 2007 CanadianSoftball Team earns Silver Medal at China Cup (Beijing,China) The China Cup concluded this morning as Canada took on China in theGold Medal game. After a key win against Australia in the first semi-final,Canada earned a direct berth to the grand final, while China had a longer road,needing to beat both Chinese Taipei and Australia, accomplishing the task toreach the grand final in front of their hometown fans. The Chinese got a fewkey hits and strong pitching throughout the game, limiting the Canadians toonly three hits for the 5-0 win. Chinaopened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a bases loaded walk issued byCanadian starting pitcher Lauren Bay Regula (Trail, BC), giving the home team a1-0 lead. China then increased its lead in the fourth, connecting for a two-runsingle with the bases loaded followed by another two-run single with runners onsecond and third. TheChinese pitchers held the Canadian bats in check, allowing only three hits andno walks over seven innings. Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC), Erin McLean(Whitby, ON) and Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) each singled for Canada. LaurenBay Regula started the game in the pitchers circle for Canada, allowing oneearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters in oneand two-thirds innings of work. Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) came on to pitchtwo innings of relief, allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk, collectingtwo strikeouts. Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) then mopped up the last two and athird innings without surrendering a hit, issuing two walks and striking outtwo Chinese hitters. Withthe win, China earned the Gold Medal in front of their fans, while Canada wasawarded with the Silver Medal. Australia took the Bronze. Withthe China Cup and Olympic Selection Camp now complete, the Canadian coachingstaff will now focus on naming the roster for the 2008 Olympic Games in BeijingChina next August. They have been evaluating the athlete pool throughout thesummer and used the China Cup as the final stage of the ongoing evaluationprocess.
