Canadasuffers setback at Pan American Games

 

(Cityof Rock, Brazil) – After finishing the round robin with
a 3-0 record, Canada’sWomen’s Softball team suffered its first
setback at the Pan American Games witha tough 7-0 loss to the
United States in the semi-final game between the twoundefeated
teams. As a result, Canada will now have to win against Venezuelatomorrow
morning to earn another shot at the Americans in the Gold Medal
game.

 

Afterboth teams were held scoreless for the first two and a half
innings, theAmericans were the first to score with three runs
in the third inning. Afterdriving in the first run of the game
with an RBI double, the United States tookadvantage of a Canadian
error in center field to score two more runs in theinning. They
kept it coming in the bottom of the fourth, as Lauren Lappin
drovein two more runs with an RBI single, and later scored on
a groundout to pushthe score to 6-0. The Americans were able
to enforce the run rule in the bottomof the fifth after another
RBI single by Lappin.

 

DanielleLawrie (Langley, BC) was the hard-luck losing pitcher
for Canada, as sheallowed only one earned run on three hits and
one walk while striking out fourin three innings of work. Katie
Rosentreter (Winnipeg, MB) came on in relief inthe top of the
fourth and gave up three earned runs on five hits and twostrikeouts
while pitching 1 2/3 innings.

 

Canadacould not figure out the strong pitching of American starter
Monica Abbott, whopitched the complete five innings and only
gave up two hits and struck outeight Canadian hitters. Jennifer
Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) and Janiva Willis(Irishtown, NB)
were the only ones able to register a hit for Canada.

 

TheUnited States earned an automatic berth in tomorrow’s Grand
Final (1:00pm EST),while Canada will now have to play Venezuela
tomorrow morning in the Final(10:00am EST). Venezuela earned
the right to play in this game by beating Cuba2-1 earlier today.
The losing team of the Canada-Venezuela game will be awardedthe
bronze medal, while the winner will go on to face the United
States in theGrand Final. Canada beat Venezuela 1-0 in eight
innings last night.
