Canadasuffers two losses; holds on to second place

 

(Beijing,China) – The Canadian Senior Women’s softball team lost
both of their gamesyesterday, but still managed to retain second
place at the end of thepreliminary round with a 3-3 record. The
Canadian team was not able to registera hit in the first game
of the day, falling to Australia by a 3-0 score. Laterin the
day, China took advantage of an error in the fourth inning and
held onfor a 4-2 win. China and Canada finished tied for second
place in theround-robin with a 3-3 record, but Canada took the
tiebreaker, allowing fewerhead-to-head runs against.

 

Inthe first game, Tanya Harding and Felicity Witt of Australia
combined to throwa no-hitter at the Canadians, allowing only
two hitters to reach base on a walkand an error, both in the
third inning. However, the red and white continuouslyput the
ball in play as only two hitters struck out in the game.

 

AfterCanadian starting pitcher Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK) struck
out the two firstbatters in the first inning, the next Australian
hitter connected for a doubleand came in to score on an RBI single.
Australia then added single runs in thesecond and fifth innings
to complete the scoring.

 

DioneMeier was the hard-luck losing pitcher, throwing all six
innings whilescattering five hits and three walks. She allowed
three earned runs and struckout eight batters in the game.

 

Inthe nightcap, China opened the scoring in the top of the third
inning, andlater added three more runs to that lead in the fourth.
With runners on secondand third and no outs, China scored both
runners on an RBI groundout and a wildpitch. The following hitter
reached on an error and later scored on an RBIsingle to give
China a 4-0 lead.

 

Canadashowed some life in the bottom of the seventh as Tamra
Howren (White Rock, BC)reached base with a lead-off walk. Alison
Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) thenconnected with a single and then
stole second base, setting the table for MeganTimpf (Port Dover,
ON) who brought both runners in to score with a single upthe
middle. China was forced to bring in a new pitcher, who consequentlyretired
the two last batters to preserve the win.

 

RobinMackin (Newmarket, ON) pitched six innings for Canada, allowing
three earnedruns on six hits and three walks while striking out
seven. Katie Rosentreter(Winnipeg, MB)  pitched one inning of
relief, allowing one unearned run ontwo hits.

 

Inother action at the China Cup, Australia defeated Chinese Taipei
7-0 to improvetheir first-place record to 6-0. With the second
place finish, Canada (3-3)will play Australia (6-0) in the first
semi-final (6:30pm EDT) to determine whowill earn a direct berth
to the Gold Medal game. The losing team will play thewinner of
the second semi-final (midnight EDT) between Chinese Taipei (0-6)
andChina (3-3).
