Junior Women's Pan American Championship III FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 11, 2010
Canada notches two more wins at Pan American Championship (Bogota, Colombia) The Canadian Junior Women's National Team won their second game of the Pan American Championship in Bogota yesterday with a convincing 9-3 win over the host country Colombia, and then defeated Peru by a 12-0 run-rule score this morning. Canada now has a 3-1 record, and will play a doubleheader on Thursday against Mexico (noon EDT) and the United States (2:00pm EDT) to end the preliminary round. Against Colombia, Canada banged out 17 hits and pitchers Shanna Wilson (Peterborough, ON) and Karissa Hovinga (La Vista, Nebraska) combined for a four-hitter including 15 strikeouts. Canada opened the scoring with two runs in the first as Jennifer Gilbert (Mckinney, Texas) led the inning off with a triple to left-centre field and scored on a Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, California) slap single. Jacqueline Omichinski (Abbotsford, BC) sacrificed Hayward to second and Hayward scored on a Katelyn Bedwell (White Rock, BC) single to left field. Canada made it 5-0 in the third. With one out, Bedwell singled and advanced to second on a groundout by Natasha Szlapetis (Brampton, ON). Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) then singled and Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) scored both runners with a double down the left field line. Kristy Noble (Uxbridge, ON) followed with a run-scoring single. With Canada up 5-0, Colombia mounted a rally with three runs in the top of the fourth as they scored two with two singles and a double, and scored their third on a throwing error. Canada responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning as they managed five consecutive hits with two outs. Bedwell singled and scored on a Szlapetis double in the gap, Wideman singled, and Szlapetis scored on Polidori's single to centre. Noble scored two runners with a double off the fence. In the fifth, Canada loaded the bases with singles by Hayward and Omichinski and an intentional walk to Bedwell but could not drive in the winning run to win via the run-rule. Shanna Wilson picked up the win as she went five innings giving up three runs on four hits and striking out 10. Karissa Hovinga finished the game with five strikeouts in two innings of work. Bedwell and Wideman led Canada with three hits each. Four players added two hits as Polidori and Noble had three RBI's each, while Gilbert and Hayward also notched a pair of hits. Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON), Omichinski and Szlapetis each chipped in with a hit. Canada then continued its winning streak with a 12-0 win against Peru. Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) struck out nine and held Peru to just a one hit through four innings. Canada did all of its scoring in the bottom of the first with a string of singles by Jennifer Gilbert, Victoria Hayward, Jacquie Omichinski and Katelyn Bedwell. Four walks and four more singles led to a twelve run first inning and that was all the team needed to complete the game. Gilbert, Hayward, Omichinski and Bedwell led the team offensively with two hits each. -SC- For more information, please contact: Gilles LeBlanc Manager - Marketing and Communications Softball Canada (613) 523-3386 ext. 3105 glebl...@softball.ca Al's Fastball News *Email: fastball(at)pmihrm.com fastb...@pmihrm.com NEWS-1: http://www.AlsFastball.com/ NEWS-2: http://fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball ISC World Tournament 2010: http://www.iscfastpitch.com/index.php?page=200 VIA http://www.webbox.com _______________________________________________ Alsfastball mailing list Alsfastball@fastpitchwest.com http://fastpitchwest.com/mailman/listinfo/alsfastball_fastpitchwest.com
