St. Thomas Storm won the STDMFL playoffs for the 6th time by beating the
Alvinston Indians 2-1 on a cold Sunday evening in Alvinston.
St. Thomas sent game 1 winner Ryan Cummings to the mound and Alvinston also
countered with their game 1 starter Kyle Crawford. The game proved to be a
pitcher's duel.Alvinston threatened in the 1st inning with lead off hitter Joe
Triest getting on base due to an error. He was sacrificed to 2nd and Jeff
Ingram later walked. However, Cummings escaped harm by stranding both
runners.Veteran 2nd baseman, Troy Rick got the Storm on the board in the top of
the 2nd by hitting the first pitch of the inning for a huge HR.St. Thomas would
then load the bases but Crawford wriggled out of the inning with 2 big strike
outs.
The 3rd inning proved to be the turning point. After getting 2 quick outs, the
game got a little more intense when Crawford hit Rick with a pitch. Chris
Wismer followed with a walk and Aaron Gould got a clutch 2 out RBI single that
scored Rick for what proved to be the winning run. St. Thomas again left the
bases loaded.Crawford cruised after that inning, retiring the next 12 Storm
hitters in order to keep his club in it.
Alvinston scored their only run in the 4th when, with 2 out Chris Drew hit a
ball over the head of the Storm right fielder for a triple and scored on an
errant throw to 3rd.
Cummings would surrender only one more hit over the final 3 innings. He was at
his best in the bottom of the 7th when he was able to strike out the side to
preserve the win. He finished with 11 ks and gave up four hits and 2 bases on
balls.Crawford gave up 3 hits, had 9 Ks and issued 4 bases on balls along with
2 hit batsmen.
Alex Chisholm chipped in with 2 hits for Alvinston while Aaron Gould had 2 hits
for St. Thomas.
After losing game 1 of the quarter finals to Glencoe, St. Thomas won 8 games in
a row, hitting 15 homeruns over that span.
The Storm would like to thank the Indians for a well played series and wish all
teams, fans and sponsors a great fall/winter and hope to see you all next spring!
