Yeah, having a real RSSI meter is really useful for pure RDF work; my point was that using quieting level (amount of noise in the audio) provides enough information to get you within APRS/GPS range of the transmitter, and so a cheap radio is probably sufficient if you also carry the APRS or GPS receiver with you while tracking. Our stuff sends a tone every few seconds for just this reason. -- -keith
