Although I'd also like amrecover and friends to mount the tape for me,
there are two reasons this does not work in general. First is that
there is no requirement that amidxtaped run on the same Amanda tape
server that wrote the tape. In particular, it may not have access to
any of the Amanda configuration information.

Second is that amtape alters the idea of what the changer thinks the
"current" slot is. So next time you run amcheck/amdump, they are going to
see that same tape and probably not like it, then have to cycle through
things until they get to what they want. In other words, you probably
want to find out what the current slot is, mount and process the tape for
amidxtaped, then restore the current slot to what it was when you started.

The changers do not have any protocol/API at the moment to save and
restore this kind of information.

And keep in mind this would need to deal with gravity stackers, which
have no way to go backward.

Also, the tape needed is not currently passed to amidxtaped, so there
will have to be a protocol change between it and amrecover, which means
a backward compatibility issue.

As I said, I'd like this ability, too. And I certainly don't want to
discourage you (or anyone else) from enhancing Amanda. But it's not
going to be an easy thing to implement properly.
