config failure with gcc

[svr4]

While installing on a linux system I got the following error:

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create 
executables.


The permissions look OK.
# which gcc
/usr/bin/gcc
# ls -l /usr/bin/gcc
-rwxr-xr-x   2 root     root        76172 May  3  2000 /usr/bin/gcc


What could be the cause?
