I just knew there would be a gotcha in there somewhere -- thus my post.
Given that I've got 40 filesystems and a tapecycle of 60, methinks I'll
just change the references and make a note to myself as to when I did so,
so that I know what I should be looking for with amrecover given the
date...

Ah, but that won't work either.  A quick test with amrecover demonstrates
that it can't find index records for sda5 if /home is in the disklist.
Well, I've been looking for an excuse to take the time to learn some Perl.
