Do you know if the exclusions are working?  There are two ways to tell.
First is to look in amdump.<nn> in the amanda.conf directory.  Find where
the estimates are being run and see if the size is better than expected.

Second is to set up some test cases.  GNU tar exclude patterns are an
art form :-).  Here's a little script I use to test with:

You set up little directories and empty files like that on the live
system, set up an exclusion list and see what happens.  Then tweak the
exclusions until it does what you want.
