The "right" way (at the moment) to do this is to use GNU tar and back up
the individual subdirectories of the file system. There are also ways
using exclude lists to split the file system in half (e.g. top level
subdirectories a-m and n-z) and there is also:
ftp://gandalf.cc.purdue.edu/pub/amanda/gtar-wrapper.*
for more control over the splitting.
