That's not what that message means.

Amanda does not use gtar to write to tape.  It runs gtar on the client
and collects that (via stdout across the network) into the holding disk.
The write to tape is done by Amanda itself.  So the error message says
gtar on the client failed.  That, in turn, means the holding disk file
is not valid, and it also means the tape was not used at all (for this
client/disk).

Was there another section of the E-mail labeled "FAILED AND STRANGE DUMP
DETAILS", and did it have anything to say about this client/disk?

What version of Amanda are you using?  If it's 2.4.2p2 (or if
you built Amanda using --with-pid-debug-files), what's in the
/tmp/amanda/sendbackup*debug file on this client for that disk?
