The usual approach is to put your Amanda user in the group that owns
the device and enable group read (but not write). Or, you can chgrp
the device to a group only your Amanda user is a member of.
For instance, my Amanda user is "backup" and it is in group "backup",
so here is a typical device entry:
crw-r----- 1 root backup 85, 5 Sep 14 2000 /dev/md/rdsk/d5
