If Christoph's idea about hosts.allow/hosts.deny does not help (and that's
the first thing I thought of, too), look in the FAQ at www.amanda.org for
this message and the corresponding amcheck "selfcheck request timed out.
Host down?" There is a lengthy list of things to look for on the client
to find out why it's not talking any more.
BTW, "amcheck -c <config>" will be easier for you to work on this
problem with.
