Probably not in the way you'd like (if I'm reading between the lines well
enough).  As Jean-Francois said, you could use amtape (in conjunction
with some changer) to make the robot move.  But to transfer the data,
it would have to look like an Amanda image.

If you want to store and retrieve arbitrary images (data streams)
with Amanda, you'll have to let it manage storing the images as well
as retrieve them.  The DUMPER-API (which is not ready) would make that
pretty easy.  An alternative is:

which overloads Amanda use of GNU tar to generate whatever kind of image
you need.

For moving the robot, another possibility is the mtx program, which
you can find at SourceForge (www.sourceforge.net).  I'm pretty sure it
has been ported to Irix.  And Amanda provides a changer that uses it.
So you could use mtx yourself and/or let Amanda run it.
