Gene Heskett sends Greetings to ajit k;
akj> Hi,
akj> I posted this message sometime back but not sure if it really
akj> went thru. So, I will repost.
akj> I plan to use amanda as my backup system on the above hardware
akj> and OS combination. I am hoping to benefit from the amanda users
akj> group.
akj> We have a Quantum DLT 4000 SCSI-2 tape device connected to a
akj> RedHat Linux 7.1 box using BusLogic BT-950 card.
akj> When the system boots, we get the following messages on the
akj> screen:
akj> Vendor: HP Model: C5173-4000 Media Changer Rev: 3.02
akj> Vendor: Quantum Model: DLT4000 Rev: CD3C
akj> The /var/log/messages file shows the following message:
akj> st0: Block limits 1-16777215 bytes.
akj> When I use the mtx utility on /dev/sg0, things are OK. I am
akj> able to do 'inquiry', 'status', 'load', 'unload' operations
akj> properly.
akj> I put a tape cartridge into the drive by using the command
akj> mtx -f /dev/sg0 load 1
akj> Then I use the mt command as below:
akj> mt -f /dev/st0 status
You really should be using /dev/nst0, as st0 rewinds the tape everytime
its closed.
akj> the output is:
akj> SCSI 2 tape drive:
akj> File number = 0, block number=0, partition=0
akj> Tape block size 0 bytes, Density code 0x1a
akj> (unknown to this mt)
akj> Soft error count since last status=0
akj> General status bits on (41010000):
akj> BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN
akj> I am using HP 1/2" DLTtape IV Data cartridge.
akj> When I try to do a tar onto the tape, I get the message:
akj> Wrote only 0 of 10240 bytes
akj> Error is not recoverable: exiting now
akj> The HP DLTtape IV cartridges are recommended for this drive.
akj> I thought there may something wrong with the particular
akj> cartridge and so I even tried brand new cartridges. The
akj> results are the same every time.
akj> Can someone please help me understand the problem here ?
akj> Thanks for your time.
akj> --ajit
The first thing that comes to mind is permissions. I think, to use tar,
you must be root.
Cheers, Gene
