Yes, they work just fine reading tapes from 82xx and 85xx series drives,
and they can write tapes readable on the 8500, 8505, and their
compressed modes.  The Eliant 820 really is just a modernized and faster
8505.

Specifically the Eliant 820 drive can read the 8200 and 8500 and 8500c
tape formats, and it can write the 8500 and 8500c tape formats.  Note
that 8200 formatted tapes are ejected again if they are not physically
write-protected.
