I guess during the initial tape cycle, the tapes got run in the wrong
order. Specifically, we have a tape, sb-prod07, that was in the wrong
slot and now every subsequent cycle expects that tape to be the next in
sequence.

How can I straighten this out? The more I look into it, the more
disorganised it appears. For example, here's my
/etc/amanda/DailySet1/tapelist:
...
I've got 28 tapes that I'd like to cycle through, but when they're out
of order like this, it fails every night as it expects the wrong tape to
be loaded.

At any rate, I'd _really_ appreciate any tips on how to get this all
cleaned up.

I see two possibilities.

1. Lower your tapecycle value to e.g. 14 tapes (but make sure your
dumpcycle is still less than your tapecycle!!!). You keep the 28 tapes.
Now amanda will still ask for the oldest tape, but she will _accept_
any tape older than the last 14 used tapes. Now feed the tapes in the
correct order. When the order is correct again, you may increase
the tapecycle to 28 again.

2. The day just before you want to give her a tape that is not old
enough, you execute the command "amrmtape DailySet1 sb-prod07". And
then just insert this tape. Amanda will use it without complaints.
You have to make sure that the contents of the tape are not critical
to restore your data (i.e. make sure you have a more recent full dump
of all filesystems on other tapes than the one you erase; eventually
make a "amadmin DailySet1 force somehost /some/filesys" the day before
to get a full dump on that tape.

You may also combine both methods: use method 2 for one or two tapes
that are too much out of sync, and straighten the rest out using
method 1.
