I assume you checked this on the client (backu), not the server (the machine you ran amcheck on), right? If it's not a firewall problem as Hery suggests, it might be amandad is dieing or hanging. Are there any processes left laying around for your Amanda user on the client? Any messages in wherever syslog puts such things? Is there a corresponding /tmp/amanda/amandad*debug file being created?
