Not quite. On most (all?) dump/ufsdump/xfsdump... you *CAN* backup a subdirectory, but you *CAN'T* do an incremental of a subdirectory. If you specify a subdirectory, Solaris ufsdump soundlessly forces level=0 and ignores the record (u) flag, Linux ext2 dump (I believe) exits if level > 0 or the u flag is set. This is what Bao is seeing above. Both behaviors are appropriately documented in the man pages. I've got a weekly forced-full amanda config that does ufsdump on several different subdirectories.
