First step: clean the tape drive. Two or three times. Second step: Try accessing the tape from outside Amanda. Using the no-rewind device, dd(1) several dump files from the tape to /dev/null, just to exercise the tape drive and make sure that cleaning the heads has resolved whatever problem was affecting the drive. If that does not work, clean the tape drive again.
Third step: If you cannot read the tape, try another Amanda tape and see if you can read that tape. If the tape is readable, amrmtape the failing tape. If the tape drive cannot read the new tape, replace the tape drive. Finally, if things appear to be working again, try running amflush to move the dump files on the disk to tape. If that succeeds, make sure that you set up a regular cleaning schedule to run a cleaning tape through the drive. I have found over years of experience, that a drive in daily use needs a cleaning tape run through it about once every two weeks. ... But then again, the cause could be something completely unrelated. However, it is always a good idea to keep the tape heads clean and to be prepared to verify that your tape drive is good before spending too much time troubleshooting Amanda. Best wishes, Donald L.
