A filesystem check helps too sometimes.
Dump for ext2 always had a bad reputation. There was no maintainer for dump for some time. Are you sure you have the latest version from http://dump.sourceforge.net/ . It is supposed to work better.
I left dump a long time ago, and use tar now (I have a mixed Solaris / Linux / MS environment - gnutar makes interoperability of restores easy).
