Doubtful. Do any files appear in /tmp/amanda? Specifically /tmp/amanda/amandad*debug would be helpful. What OS are you using? Have you setup (x)inetd appropriately?
I´m running AMANDA in Debian with kernel 2.4.20. The inetd is allright but in a file in /tmp/amanda
appears this:
